Psilocybin for anorexia nervosa

Owing to both the physical consequences of the condition and high suicide rates, anorexia nervosa has the highest death rate of any medical disorder. There are only a few pharmacological and therapeutic options available right now. Both of them appear to concentrate on treating symptoms rather than addressing the disorder’s underlying cause.

There has been growing evidence for the use of psilocybin-assisted therapy in the treatment of a variety of psychiatric conditions, and experimental data from Dr. Spriggs indicated that it may also be useful in the treatment of anorexia nervosa.

Psilocybin is thought to have two modes of action in the treatment of anorexia nervosa: pharmacologically, by treating the serotonin deficiency in the brain linked to the disorder, and therapeutically, by moving away from symptom-focused treatment and encouraging increases in self-worth and self-compassion.
