Psychedelics – assisted psychotherapy in Iowa
The future is uncertain, but there are a few reasons to be optimistic about Iowa’s drug laws surrounding psilocybin. A Republican senator, for example, proposed an amendment to an ongoing budget bill that would potentially decriminalize psilocybin in the state.
A panel of two Republicans and one Democrat failed to advance the legislation, but it nevertheless was an important development for drug policy in Iowa and the nation. It positions psychedelic drug reform as a legitimate public policy issue, even in a conservative state. Despite the bill’s failure, it could pave the way for potential efforts to relax the state’s ban on magic mushrooms.
Psychedelic mushrooms appear to be surprisingly familiar to Iowans. Every one of the more than 20 online comments was in favor of the bill. Just legislators and state government lobbyists spoke out against the bill at the Statehouse.
